Baruchel was only twelve when he landed his first acting role. In 1996, he had one of his first significant acting roles in the local television show My Hometown. From 1997 to 1998, he jointly organized Popular Mechanics for Kids alongside Elisha Cuthbert. After making a brief cameo in Cameron Crowe’s Oscar-winning film Almost Famous, Baruchel landed the role of Steven Karp in Judd Apatow’s critically acclaimed but short-lived television series Undeclared, alongside Charlie Hunnam, Seth Rogen, Monica Keena, and Carla Gallo. Next, he made an appearance in Roger Avary’s The Rules of Attraction alongside James Van Der Beek.

The lead single from The Tragically Hip’s archival EP Saskadelphia, “Ouch,” featured Baruchel and his spouse, Rebecca-Jo Dunham, in the music video that same year.
